Council and civic church
St Marien in Lübeck
At 125 metres high, the two towers tower mightily and proudly over the surrounding buildings in Lübeck's Old Town and can be seen from many points in the city and the surrounding area.
The 7 towers of the old town churches are often referred to as the city crown. The view from the ridge turret at a height of 50 metres shows the magnificent location of St Marien in the historic centre of Lübeck.
St Marien bears the history of several ages. The building, which still characterises the skyline of Lübeck today, stands for medieval religiosity, the pride of the aspiring bourgeoisie and Lübeck's role as the "Queen of the Hanseatic League". The Reformation and the Baroque period have also left clear traces. But the wounds of war and destruction are also part of St Marien.
